WireGuard handshake works but DNS leaks on hotel Wi-Fi – how I fixed it

    WireGuard connected, handshake was fine, but dnsleaktest showed the hotel resolver answering queries. The tunnel was up while DNS went around it.

    The fix on the client side was to set DNS = 10.2.0.1 in the peer config, and enable “Block untunneled traffic” so DHCP-provided DNS could not win. On the server, I made sure the resolver only listened inside the tunnel.

    If you are on a travel router, also confirm the router hands out the tunnel DNS to clients; some firmwares keep the WAN DNS for DHCP leases.

    Had exactly this in a Tokyo hotel. The router was advertising its own DNS to clients even with the tunnel up. Setting the DHCP DNS option fixed it.

    Also worth testing after every network change. Hotels that force a captive portal can switch your DNS back to theirs once you authenticate.
